Many travelers make the journey from Delhi to Amritsar and the Golden Temple, then from Amritsar to Dharamsala. Although there are no flights between Amritsar and Dharamsala, it's easy to continue on by train, bus, or taxi.

By Train from Amritsar to Pathankot and Dharamsala

You can travel by train from Amritsar to Pathankot, then on to Dharamsala by toy train, bus, or taxi.

First buy your Amritsar to Pathankot train ticket online, at the station, or at a computerized train reservation office in the Golden Temple complex. It's a good idea to book your train ticket in advance as trains are often heavily booked.

Trains with travel time over 3 hours, or more than 1 train with the same departure and arrival times are not included in the list below.

Once you reach Pathankot, there are again several options for getting to Dharamsala:

• Taxi: Quickest and very scenic ~ 2.5 to 3 hours
• Bus: Cheapest and usually crowded ~ 4 hours - If your bus stops in lower Dharamsala, you will need to take another bus or taxi up to Mcleod Ganj & Naddi. However, if you arrive in the middle of the night, there won't be any local buses or taxis available.
• Toy Train: Slowest and most spectacular scenery: narrow gauge railway ~ 4.5 hours to Kangra, or about 6 hours to Palumpur.

If you decide to continue your journey by toy train, there are trains leaving every few hours. Listed below is a departure time that is convenient to the morning trains arriving in Pathankot from Delhi.

Some may decide to continue on from Kangra to the scenic tea gardens of Palumpur. The bus from either Kangra or Palumpur to Mcleodganj and Naddi, Dharamsala will take about 2 hours, and a taxi will take about one hour.

Tickets for the Kangra Toy Train can be purchased at Pathankot, or any station serving the Kangra Valley Railway.

The bus station is just across the street from the railway station.There is a direct bus from Amritsar to lower Dharamsala which takes about 6 to 7 hours. Once you reach lower Dharamsala, you can catch a bus or taxi to Naddi and Mcleod Ganj in upper Dharamsala. However, if you arrive late at night, there won't be any bus or taxi service available.

A taxi from Amritsar to Dharamsala takes about 5 hours, and costs 4700 INR ~ $103 for a large size that will hold up to 9 people.
