Nyingtob Ling, Realm of Courage

Dharamsala Children: Nyingtob Ling, Realm of Courage

Just a few minutes walk from Norbulingka Institute, is Nyingtob Ling, the “Realm of Courage,” named and blessed by the Dalai Lama for the very special and courageous children who live and learn here.

As thousands of Tibetans continue to make the long and challenging trek through the Himalayas to northern India, most eventually arrive in Dharamsala, homeless, jobless, and some with special needs children they find themselves unable to support in their new circumstances.

To fulfill this need, Nyingtob Ling was established in 1999 through the inspiration of Mrs. Nawanag Lhamo, offering support and relief for the families, and a caring environment for the children.

The original “Realm of Courage” was built of light cement blocks and tin roof, and sheltered 7 children. Conditions were quite challenging in the beginning with only one toilet and a bucket for a cold water bath, extreme heat in the summer heightened by the tin roof, thunderous noise from the summer monsoon rain on the tin roof, and freezing cold conditions in winter time. In addition, it was a daily challenge to provide nourishing meals on a limited budget.

Despite all the challenges, the children and staff of Nyingtob Ling, the “Realm of Courage,” persevered, creating handicrafts and art, including friendship bracelets, purses, bags, cards, and beautiful paintings.

Today, Nyingtob Ling, has 70 children, a new home with dormitories, six classrooms, staff rooms, a clinic, a spacious kitchen, and a temple, thanks to many generous donations and sales of the children’s art and handicrafts.
