His Holiness has commended the monastic community, young people and many others from nearby areas for their support and assistance to the families of those who have lost everything.
The location of the earthquake in Kyigudo/Yushu County, in Qinghai Province on the Tibetan Plateau is the birthplace of both HH the Dalai Lama and the late Panchen Lama.
The Dalai Lama has appealed to
governments, international aid organizations and other agencies to extend whatever assistance they can to enable the families of those devastated by this tragedy to rebuild their lives.
At the same time, I also call on the survivors of this catastrophe to recognize what has happened as the workings of karma and to transform this adversity into something positive, keeping their hopes up and meeting setbacks with courage as they struggle to restore what they have lost. Once again, I pray for those who have lost their lives as well as for the well being of those who have survived.

The Karmapa Foundation of America is donating $200,000 for immediate earthquake relief, and has called on all compassionate people to pray sincerely for victims of the earthquake, and to become involved in different kinds of relief activity.
Death and impermanence is an integral part of life. When this kind of disaster strikes, may the power of the natural goodness within all of us provide physical and mental comfort and the courage to start anew.
When you are happy, dedicate that happiness to all beings,
so that happiness may pervade the sky.
When you suffer, you are bearing the suffering of all beings.
May the ocean of suffering become dry completely.
17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, 17th April, 2010
The April 14, 2010 earthquake on the Tibetan Plateau in Yushu, Qinghai, has had great personal impact on the nuns. Before the devastating earthquake, this area was home to many of the nuns you see in this film. It has been reported that their monastic home in Nangchen, Tibet is intact, but that many are mourning the loss of family members who died in the earthquake and those that have been left shocked and homeless. Their prayers go out to all who are suffering.
The power of the nun's practice has a profound impact on the surrounding communities and villages which become very peaceful and noticeably happier as harsh speech, violence, alcoholism, and excessive drinking dramatically decline. As they transform the hearts and minds of the surrounding communities, their love and compassion expands and continues to branch out to the rest of the world.
This past Wednesday, April 14, a devastating earthquake struck Tibet's prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai province. This is an area with a special connection to our beloved teachers, as Gar Monastery lies within eight hours travel time of Yushu. The families of Gape Lama, Traga Rinpoche, and many others call this area home.
Tragically, at this moment, thousands of families' homes lie in rubble. Over 1,000 lives have already been lost, with more than 10,000 injured. As is the case for any disaster that leaves many homeless and without access to adequate medical supplies, shelter, and food, these numbers could rise dramatically. At the very least, people are in need of the basics to sustain life, yet they are in a situation where relief is difficult to obtain.
Unfortunately, this remote area will not receive the high profile attention given to other recent disasters. Garchen Rinpoche is thus asking his students and friends to make a special effort to help the people of Yushu, many of whom have a special connection to our lamas and lineage. Donations are needed immediately. Even an hour or a day can make a difference to someone's life.
If you would like to be a part of our effort to help the people of Yushu recover from this disaster, please donate. Even a small donation can have a great impact. We are working with Tibet Aid to get the funds to Yushu, as we have partnered with Tibet Aid for the last decade on many projects ranging from schools and health clinics to monasteries. Tibet Aid was started by a student of Garchen Rinpoche, and we have complete confidence in Tibet Aid's dedication and integrity on behalf of the Tibetan people. We will collect the monies as a worldwide sangha and send it to Yushu on behalf of Garchen Rinpoche's efforts for the Tibetan people of that area.

We will also be conducting a Chenrezig/Tara Drubchen here at the center in Chino Valley from April 23-28, and we will dedicate this practice to the earthquake victims. During the Drubchen we will do a special 100 Deity Practice on their behalf. Everyone can help the victims of the quake by reciting Chenrezig mantras, and we've put up a counter at www.garchen.net where you can enter your accumulations.
We can make a difference for the Tibetan people affected by this quake at this critical time, and we thank you for your good hearts!
On April 14th a 6.9 earthquake struck in southern Qinghai, in Yushu county. (More than 2000) people have been confirmed dead so far, many more are still missing, and thousands more injured.
Sengdruk Taktse School is located about 5 hours from Yushu, and while Sengdruk Taktse School was not physically impacted by the earthquake, there are many students who have family that live in Yushu County.
If you would like to help the people of Yushu County, you can donate through the Joru Foundation. 100% of your donation will go directly to local rescue, and restoration efforts of the Yushu area that was affected by the earthquake.
